Description
Make classic smash burgers for your 4th of July celebration.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 4 hamburger buns
- Your favorite burger toppings (cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, ketchup, mustard, etc.)
Instructions
- Divide ground beef into 4 equal portions. Gently form each portion into a loose ball. Do not overwork the meat.
- Season the outsides of the meat balls generously with salt and pepper.
- Heat a flat griddle or cast iron skillet over medium-high heat until very hot.
- Place the meat balls on the hot griddle, leaving space between them.
- Using a sturdy spatula or burger press, smash each meat ball down into a thin patty. The flatter you make them, the crispier the edges will be.
- Cook for 2-3 minutes per side, or until the edges are crispy and the center is cooked through. If adding cheese, place a slice on top during the last minute of cooking and cover with a lid to help it melt.
- Toast your hamburger buns on the griddle for a minute or two until lightly golden.
- Assemble your smash burgers on the toasted buns with your favorite toppings.
Notes
- Use 80/20 ground beef for the best flavor and crispiness.
- Make sure your griddle is very hot before adding the meat.
- Do not flip the burgers until they are ready.
- Customize your toppings to your liking.
