Description

Follow these steps to make thin, crunchy potato chips using your air fryer with minimal oil.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 medium Russet potatoes
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or avocado oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)

Instructions

  1. Wash and thinly slice the potatoes. Aim for a thickness of about 1/16 inch using a mandoline slicer for best results.
  2. Place the sliced potatoes in a large bowl and cover them completely with cold water. Soak for at least 30 minutes, or up to 2 hours, to remove excess starch.
  3. Drain the potatoes thoroughly and rinse them under cold water until the water runs clear.
  4. Dry the potato slices completely using paper towels or a clean kitchen cloth. Moisture prevents crisping.
  5. In a clean bowl, toss the dried slices with the oil, salt, paprika, and garlic powder until lightly coated.
  6. Preheat your air fryer to 350°F (175°C).
  7. Arrange the seasoned potato slices in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Do not overcrowd the basket; work in batches if necessary.
  8. Air fry for 10 to 15 minutes, shaking the basket every 5 minutes to promote even cooking.
  9. Check frequently after the 10-minute mark. The chips are done when they are golden brown and firm.
  10. Remove the chips immediately and let them cool on a wire rack for 5 minutes. They will crisp up further as they cool.

Notes

  • Russet potatoes work best due to their high starch content, which aids crispiness.
  • If your chips stick together, they were likely too close or not dry enough before cooking.
  • For salt and vinegar flavor, toss the cooked chips with 1 teaspoon of white vinegar powder or spray lightly with vinegar before the final minute of cooking.
  • For a no-oil version, skip the oil toss, but you may need to increase the cooking time slightly and watch carefully to prevent burning.
