Ingredients
Scale
- 1 package (13.8 ounces) refrigerated pizza dough or crescent roll dough
- 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large Granny Smith apple, peeled, cored, and finely diced
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon cornstarch
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 cup water
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar
- 2 tablespoons milk or cream
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Prepare the apple filling: In a small saucepan, combine the diced apple, granulated sugar, cornstarch, nutmeg, and water.
- Cook the apple mixture over medium heat, stirring frequently, until the apples soften slightly and the liquid thickens, about 5 to 7 minutes. Remove from heat and let it cool completely.
- Unroll the refrigerated dough onto a clean surface. If using crescent roll dough, pinch the seams together to form one large rectangle.
- Brush the entire surface of the dough with the melted butter.
- In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar and ground cinnamon. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the buttered dough.
- Spread the cooled apple filling evenly over the dough, leaving a small border along one long edge.
- Starting from the long edge opposite the border, tightly roll the dough into a log.
- Pinch the seam closed firmly to seal the log.
- Use unflavored dental floss or a sharp knife to cut the log into 10 to 12 equal rolls.
- Place the rolls cut-side up in a lightly greased 9×13 inch baking dish.
- Cover the dish loosely with plastic wrap and let the rolls rise in a warm spot for about 30 minutes, or until puffy.
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Bake the rolls for 20 to 25 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.
- While the rolls bake, prepare the glaze: Whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Remove the rolls from the oven and let them cool in the pan for 5 minutes.
- Drizzle the glaze generously over the warm rolls. Serve immediately.
Notes
- Using dental floss helps you get clean cuts without squishing the rolls.
- If your apples are very tart, add one extra teaspoon of granulated sugar to the filling.
- You can use store-bought cream cheese frosting instead of making the simple glaze for an extra decadent treat.
