Description

Make these Apple Pie Cinnamon Rolls for a comforting mashup of your favorite flavors. You get the sweet, spiced apple filling swirled into soft, tender cinnamon roll dough. This recipe makes a delightful treat that tastes homemade with simple steps.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 package (13.8 ounces) refrigerated pizza dough or crescent roll dough
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large Granny Smith apple, peeled, cored, and finely diced
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk or cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Prepare the apple filling: In a small saucepan, combine the diced apple, granulated sugar, cornstarch, nutmeg, and water.
  2. Cook the apple mixture over medium heat, stirring frequently, until the apples soften slightly and the liquid thickens, about 5 to 7 minutes. Remove from heat and let it cool completely.
  3. Unroll the refrigerated dough onto a clean surface. If using crescent roll dough, pinch the seams together to form one large rectangle.
  4. Brush the entire surface of the dough with the melted butter.
  5. In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar and ground cinnamon. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the buttered dough.
  6. Spread the cooled apple filling evenly over the dough, leaving a small border along one long edge.
  7. Starting from the long edge opposite the border, tightly roll the dough into a log.
  8. Pinch the seam closed firmly to seal the log.
  9. Use unflavored dental floss or a sharp knife to cut the log into 10 to 12 equal rolls.
  10. Place the rolls cut-side up in a lightly greased 9×13 inch baking dish.
  11. Cover the dish loosely with plastic wrap and let the rolls rise in a warm spot for about 30 minutes, or until puffy.
  12. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  13. Bake the rolls for 20 to 25 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.
  14. While the rolls bake, prepare the glaze: Whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  15. Remove the rolls from the oven and let them cool in the pan for 5 minutes.
  16. Drizzle the glaze generously over the warm rolls. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • Using dental floss helps you get clean cuts without squishing the rolls.
  • If your apples are very tart, add one extra teaspoon of granulated sugar to the filling.
  • You can use store-bought cream cheese frosting instead of making the simple glaze for an extra decadent treat.
