Description

Make a flaky, spiced apple strudel using store-bought puff pastry for a quick and impressive dessert.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 package (14.1 ounces) frozen puff pastry, thawed
  • 4 medium Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup raisins (optional)
  • 1/4 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)
  • 1 large egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar (for dusting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and flour. Toss gently until the apples are evenly coated. Stir in the raisins and nuts, if using.
  3. Unfold the thawed puff pastry sheet onto a lightly floured surface. If using two sheets, gently press the seam to seal them together. Roll the pastry slightly to form a rectangle about 10×12 inches.
  4. Brush the edges of the pastry lightly with the melted butter.
  5. Spoon the apple filling in a line down the center third of the pastry, leaving a 1-inch border on the short ends.
  6. Fold the long sides of the pastry over the filling, overlapping them slightly to seal the top seam. Gently press the ends to close.
  7. Carefully transfer the strudel seam-side down onto the prepared baking sheet. Brush the entire top surface with the beaten egg wash.
  8. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and puffed.
  9. Remove from the oven and let cool on the baking sheet for 10 minutes.
  10. Dust generously with powdered sugar before slicing and serving warm.

Notes

  • For a traditional look, you can score the top of the pastry lightly with a sharp knife before brushing with egg wash.
  • Serve with vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
  • If you prefer a less sweet filling, reduce the total sugar by 2 tablespoons.
