Description

Bake these soft, warm donuts coated in sweet cinnamon sugar. They are easy to make and taste just like the ones you remember from childhood. This recipe brings comfort right to your kitchen.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup milk, warm
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar, plus more for coating
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • Vegetable oil, for brushing
  • 1/4 cup ground cinnamon, for coating

Instructions

  1. Warm the milk until it is lukewarm, about 105-115°F.
  2. In a small bowl, sprinkle the yeast over the warm milk. Let it sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together the melted butter, 1/4 cup sugar, egg, vanilla extract, and salt.
  4. Pour the yeast mixture into the wet ingredients and stir well.
  5. Gradually add the flour, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  6. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5 to 7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  7. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turning to coat. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm spot for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  8. Gently punch down the risen dough. On a floured surface, roll the dough out to about 1/2 inch thickness.
  9. Use a donut cutter or two different-sized round cutters to cut out donut shapes. Place the cut donuts on parchment-lined baking sheets.
  10. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  11. Bake the donuts for 8 to 10 minutes, flipping halfway through, until lightly golden brown.
  12. While the donuts bake, mix the remaining sugar and cinnamon together in a shallow dish.
  13. Brush the warm baked donuts lightly with melted butter.
  14. Immediately toss each warm donut in the cinnamon sugar mixture until fully coated. Serve warm.

Notes

  • If you do not have a donut cutter, you can use two biscuit cutters or a drinking glass and a bottle cap for the center hole.
  • Always check your milk temperature; too hot will kill the yeast.
  • This recipe works well for using up leftover egg whites if you have them.
