Description
Learn the simple, no-fuss method for baking sweet potatoes in the oven to achieve a perfectly caramelized skin and a soft, fluffy interior. This is the best sweet potato cooking method for an easy dinner side.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 medium sweet potatoes (about 8-10 ounces each)
- 1 teaspoon coarse salt (for sprinkling)
- 1 tablespoon olive oil (optional, for extra crispy skin)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit (200 degrees Celsius). You do not need to wrap the potatoes in foil for this method.
- Wash the sweet potatoes thoroughly under running water. Scrub the skin well to remove any dirt. Pat them completely dry with a paper towel.
- Prick each sweet potato deeply 5 to 6 times all over using a fork or sharp knife. This allows steam to escape and prevents bursting.
- If you want a crispier skin, lightly rub the outside of each potato with olive oil.
- Sprinkle the coarse salt evenly over the outside of each potato. This helps draw out moisture and enhances the skin’s texture.
- Place the prepared sweet potatoes directly onto the middle oven rack. Do not place them on a baking sheet, as this traps steam and prevents the skin from crisping.
- Bake for 45 to 60 minutes. The exact oven baked sweet potatoes time depends on the size of your potatoes. Start checking around 45 minutes.
- The potatoes are done when the skin is slightly wrinkled and caramelized, and you can easily pierce the center with a fork with no resistance.
- Carefully remove the potatoes from the oven. Let them cool for about 10 minutes before slicing them open lengthwise.
- Fluff the inside flesh with a fork and serve immediately with your favorite toppings.
Notes
- For the fluffiest texture, avoid wrapping the potatoes in foil. Baking them directly on the rack allows moisture to escape, resulting in a drier, fluffier interior.
- If you are making twice baked sweet potatoes later, bake them until just tender, then scoop out the flesh.
- To speed up the process for quick baked sweet potatoes, you can microwave them for 5 minutes before baking them at 400F for 30 minutes.
- For a simple sweet potato side dish, try topping with cinnamon butter or a sprinkle of brown sugar.
