Description

Make this simple, gooey caramel apple dessert with only four main ingredients. You can bake it in the oven or cook it in a slow cooker for minimal effort.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (21 ounce) can apple pie filling
  • 1 (15.25 ounce) box yellow or white cake mix (do not mix)
  • 1 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup caramel sauce (for drizzling after baking)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the slow cooker or baking dish. For the slow cooker, line a 6-quart slow cooker with parchment paper for easy removal. For the oven, grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Spread the entire can of apple pie filling evenly across the bottom of your prepared dish.
  3. Sprinkle the dry cake mix evenly over the apple layer. Do not stir or mix the cake mix into the apples.
  4. If using nuts, sprinkle them over the dry cake mix layer.
  5. Slowly pour the melted butter evenly over the entire surface of the dry cake mix. The butter should soak through the mix.
  6. For Oven Method: Bake at 350 degrees F for 40 to 50 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.
  7. For Slow Cooker Method: Cook on LOW for 3 to 4 hours or on HIGH for 1.5 to 2 hours. The topping should be set and golden brown around the edges.
  8. Let the cake cool slightly. Drizzle generously with caramel sauce before serving warm.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use caramel apple pie filling if available instead of plain apple pie filling.
  • If you do not have pecans, you can omit the nuts entirely for a three-ingredient version.
  • Serve this dessert warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
