Description
This homemade caramelized onion dip is a party favorite. It’s rich, savory, and much more flavorful than store-bought options. You can make it ahead for stress-free entertaining.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt, plus more to taste
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper, plus more to taste
- 1 cup sour cream
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 1/4 cup finely chopped fresh chives (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
- Melt butter in a large skillet over medium-low heat. Add sliced onions, sugar, salt, and pepper.
- Cook, stirring occasionally, until onions are deeply golden brown and caramelized, about 30-45 minutes. If onions start to stick, add a tablespoon of water.
- Remove skillet from heat and let the caramelized onions cool slightly.
- In a medium bowl, combine sour cream and mayonnaise.
- Add the cooled caramelized onions to the sour cream mixture. Stir until well combined.
- Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper if needed.
- Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow flavors to meld.
- Before serving, stir the dip and garnish with fresh chives, if desired.
Notes
- You can caramelize the onions a day in advance and store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
- For a smoother dip, you can pulse the caramelized onions in a food processor before adding them to the sour cream mixture.
