Description

A recipe for rich, fudgy brownies topped with a thick, homemade chocolate frosting.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (use Dutch-process for darker color)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (for batter)
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)
  • 2 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder, sifted
  • 1/4 cup milk or heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line a 9×13 inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving an overhang on the sides.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk the melted butter and granulated sugar together until combined.
  3. Beat in the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, 3/4 cup cocoa powder, and salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing only until just combined. Do not overmix.
  6. Fold in the chocolate chips.
  7. Spread the batter evenly into the prepared pan.
  8. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes. A toothpick inserted near the center should come out with moist crumbs attached, not wet batter, for a fudgy texture.
  9. Let the brownies cool completely in the pan on a wire rack before frosting.
  10. To make the frosting, beat the 1/2 cup softened butter in a medium bowl until creamy.
  11. Gradually add the sifted powdered sugar and 1/2 cup cocoa powder, alternating with the milk or cream. Mix until smooth.
  12. Stir in the vanilla extract. Add more milk, one teaspoon at a time, if the frosting is too stiff.
  13. Once the brownies are completely cool, spread the frosting evenly over the top. Cut into squares.

Notes

  • For an intense chocolate flavor, use high-quality Dutch-process cocoa powder in both the batter and the frosting.
  • To achieve a glossy frosting finish, ensure your butter is at room temperature and mix the frosting slowly to avoid incorporating too much air.
  • If you prefer a chewier edge, bake closer to 25 minutes; for a slightly cakey center, bake closer to 30 minutes.
