Description
A recipe for rich, fudgy brownies topped with a thick, homemade chocolate frosting.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, melted
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 4 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (use Dutch-process for darker color)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (for batter)
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)
- 2 cups powdered sugar, sifted
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder, sifted
- 1/4 cup milk or heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line a 9×13 inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving an overhang on the sides.
- In a large bowl, whisk the melted butter and granulated sugar together until combined.
- Beat in the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, 3/4 cup cocoa powder, and salt.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing only until just combined. Do not overmix.
- Fold in the chocolate chips.
- Spread the batter evenly into the prepared pan.
- Bake for 25 to 30 minutes. A toothpick inserted near the center should come out with moist crumbs attached, not wet batter, for a fudgy texture.
- Let the brownies cool completely in the pan on a wire rack before frosting.
- To make the frosting, beat the 1/2 cup softened butter in a medium bowl until creamy.
- Gradually add the sifted powdered sugar and 1/2 cup cocoa powder, alternating with the milk or cream. Mix until smooth.
- Stir in the vanilla extract. Add more milk, one teaspoon at a time, if the frosting is too stiff.
- Once the brownies are completely cool, spread the frosting evenly over the top. Cut into squares.
Notes
- For an intense chocolate flavor, use high-quality Dutch-process cocoa powder in both the batter and the frosting.
- To achieve a glossy frosting finish, ensure your butter is at room temperature and mix the frosting slowly to avoid incorporating too much air.
- If you prefer a chewier edge, bake closer to 25 minutes; for a slightly cakey center, bake closer to 30 minutes.
