Description
Enjoy a simple yet decadent breakfast with Classic French Toast. This recipe features bread soaked in a rich custard and fried to a perfect golden brown, ready to be drizzled with your favorite syrup.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 slices of bread (brioche, challah, or thick-cut white bread work well)
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Butter or oil for frying
- Maple syrup for serving
Instructions
- In a shallow dish, whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla extract until well combined.
- Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, coating both sides. Let soak for about 30 seconds per side, or until the bread is saturated but not falling apart.
- Heat a lightly buttered or oiled griddle or frying pan over medium heat.
- Place the soaked bread slices onto the hot griddle and cook for 3-4 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through.
- Serve immediately with maple syrup and your favorite toppings.
Notes
- Using slightly stale bread works best as it absorbs the custard without becoming too soggy.
- Adjust the cinnamon and sugar to your preference.
- Feel free to add a pinch of nutmeg for extra flavor.
