Description

Make simple, comforting apple dumplings using store-bought crescent roll dough and a rich brown sugar syrup.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 medium apples (like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
  • 1 can (8 ounces) refrigerated crescent roll dough
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees F. Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Peel, core, and slice the apples into thick wedges.
  3. Unroll the crescent roll dough. Cut each triangle in half crosswise to create smaller rectangles.
  4. Place one apple wedge on the wide end of a dough piece. Roll the dough around the apple to fully enclose it. Pinch the seams closed.
  5. Place the wrapped apple dumplings, seam-side down, in the prepared baking dish.
  6. In a medium saucepan, combine the granulated sugar, brown sugar, water, butter, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  7. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, stirring until the butter melts and the sugar dissolves. Boil for 1 minute.
  8. Pour the hot syrup evenly over the apple dumplings in the baking dish.
  9. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and the apples are tender.
  10. Let the dumplings cool slightly before serving warm, spooning extra syrup over each one.

Notes

  • Serve these warm apple dumplings with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
  • If you prefer a tangier filling, sprinkle a small amount of lemon juice over the apples before wrapping them in dough.
  • You can substitute half the water in the syrup with lemon-lime soda for a slightly different flavor profile.
