Description

Prepare a flavorful and tender flank steak using a simple soy sauce, ginger, and garlic marinade, perfect for grilling or pan-searing.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1.5 lb flank steak
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, vegetable oil, brown sugar, grated ginger, minced garlic, sesame oil, and black pepper to create the marinade.
  2. Place the flank steak in a large zip-top bag or shallow dish. Pour the marinade over the steak, ensuring it is fully coated.
  3. Marinate the steak in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours, or up to 8 hours for deeper flavor. Do not marinate longer than 8 hours, as the soy sauce can break down the meat fibers too much.
  4. Remove the steak from the refrigerator 30 minutes before cooking to allow it to come closer to room temperature. Discard the used marinade.
  5. Preheat your grill to medium-high heat (about 400 degrees Fahrenheit). Lightly oil the grates.
  6. Grill the steak for 4 to 6 minutes per side for medium-rare, depending on thickness. Use a meat thermometer to check for doneness (130-135°F for medium-rare).
  7. Remove the steak from the grill and place it on a cutting board. Tent loosely with foil and let it rest for 10 minutes before slicing.
  8. Slice the steak thinly against the grain for maximum tenderness. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • For pan-searing, heat 1 tablespoon of neutral oil in a heavy skillet over medium-high heat. Sear the steak for 4-6 minutes per side until done.
  • Always slice flank steak against the grain to ensure the meat is tender when you eat it.
  • For a complete meal, serve this steak with steamed rice and quick-sautéed broccoli or asparagus.
