Description

Make easy, flavorful beef sliders topped with deeply caramelized onions and melted cheese, baked on sweet rolls until golden.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon salt, divided
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper, divided
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 12 slider buns (Hawaiian rolls or potato rolls)
  • 8 slices Provolone cheese (or Gruyère)
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

Instructions

  1. Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook slowly, stirring occasionally, for 25 to 35 minutes until they are deep brown and soft. Stir in 1/2 teaspoon of salt during the last 5 minutes of cooking. Set onions aside.
  2. In the same skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat, breaking it apart until browned. Drain any excess fat.
  3. Return the skillet to low heat. Stir in the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, and remaining 1/2 teaspoon of salt and 1/4 teaspoon of pepper. Simmer for 5 minutes until the liquid slightly reduces. Stir the caramelized onions into the beef mixture.
  4. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Slice the slider buns in half horizontally. Place the bottom halves of the buns in a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  5. Spread the beef and onion mixture evenly over the bottom buns. Top the mixture with the slices of Provolone cheese. Place the top halves of the buns over the cheese.
  6. In a small bowl, whisk together the 2 tablespoons of melted butter and Dijon mustard. Brush this mixture evenly over the tops of the assembled sliders.
  7. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the cheese is fully melted and the tops of the buns are golden brown. Let the sliders rest for 5 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use Gruyère cheese instead of Provolone.
  • If you prefer a saucier filling, add 1/4 cup of dry red wine when simmering the beef mixture.
  • You can brush the tops of the buns with melted butter mixed with a pinch of garlic powder for extra flavor before baking.
