Description

Create adorable ghost meringues for a fun and spooky Halloween treat. These light and airy confections are simple to make and perfect for parties.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large egg whites, at room temperature
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • Black edible food coloring or black edible marker

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 200°F (95°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a clean, dry bowl, beat the egg whites and salt with an electric mixer on medium speed until soft peaks form.
  3. Gradually add the granulated sugar, one tablespoon at a time, while continuing to beat on high speed. Beat until stiff, glossy peaks form and the sugar has dissolved.
  4. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Transfer the meringue mixture to a piping bag fitted with a round tip.
  6. Pipe ghost shapes onto the prepared baking sheet. For each ghost, pipe a base and then a rounded top.
  7. Use a small amount of black edible food coloring on a toothpick to draw two small eyes on each meringue ghost. Alternatively, use a black edible marker.
  8. Bake for 1 hour to 1 hour and 30 minutes, or until the meringues are dry to the touch and lift easily off the parchment paper.
  9. Turn off the oven, leave the door slightly ajar, and let the meringues cool completely inside the oven. This prevents cracking.
  10. Store the cooled meringues in an airtight container at room temperature.

Notes

  • Ensure your bowl and beaters are completely free of grease for the best meringue results.
  • Room temperature egg whites whip up with more volume.
  • You can also use a spoon to create ghost shapes if you don’t have a piping bag.
  • Baking time may vary depending on your oven and the size of your meringues.
