Description

Make this Grilled Cheese Sloppy Joe Sandwich for a messy, comforting dinner. This recipe combines the familiar taste of Sloppy Joes with the gooey perfection of grilled cheese. It is easy and tastes like you spent all day preparing it.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 cup chopped onion
  • 1/2 cup chopped green pepper
  • 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 8 slices bread (your favorite kind)
  • 8 slices cheese (cheddar or American work well)
  • Butter or mayonnaise for grilling

Instructions

  1. Brown the ground beef with onion and green pepper in a large skillet over medium heat. Drain off any excess fat.
  2. Stir in the tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.
  3. Bring the mixture to a simmer. Reduce heat to low and cook for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens slightly. This is your Sloppy Joe filling.
  4. Butter or spread mayonnaise on one side of each slice of bread.
  5. Assemble four sandwiches: Place one slice of bread, butter-side down, in a clean skillet or griddle over medium heat.
  6. Top with two slices of cheese, a generous scoop of the Sloppy Joe filling, and another slice of cheese.
  7. Top with the second slice of bread, butter-side up.
  8. Grill for 3 to 4 minutes per side, pressing gently with a spatula, until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted and gooey.
  9. Cut in half and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Savana suggests using mayonnaise on the outside of the bread instead of butter for an extra crispy, golden crust.
  • Feel free to add a dash of hot sauce to the Sloppy Joe mixture for a little kick.
  • If you want to make this recipe even quicker, use pre-made Sloppy Joe sauce and skip steps 1 and 2.
