Make a rich and creamy hot chocolate from scratch using real chocolate for a decadent winter drink.
Ingredients

- 3 cups whole milk
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 4 ounces bittersweet or semi-sweet chocolate, finely chopped
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Combine milk, heavy cream, chopped chocolate, sugar, cocoa powder, and salt in a medium saucepan.
- Heat the mixture over medium heat, whisking constantly until the chocolate is completely melted and the mixture is hot but not boiling. Do not let it boil.
- Remove the saucepan from the heat. Stir in the vanilla extract.
- Taste and add more sugar if you prefer a sweeter drink.
- Pour the hot chocolate into mugs immediately.
Notes
- For a thicker texture, whisk in 1 teaspoon of cornstarch mixed with 1 tablespoon of cold milk before heating.
- Top with fresh whipped cream or mini marshmallows.
- Substitute whole milk with oat milk or almond milk for a dairy-free option.
