Description

Make a rich and creamy hot chocolate from scratch using real chocolate for a decadent winter drink.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 4 ounces bittersweet or semi-sweet chocolate, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Combine milk, heavy cream, chopped chocolate, sugar, cocoa powder, and salt in a medium saucepan.
  2. Heat the mixture over medium heat, whisking constantly until the chocolate is completely melted and the mixture is hot but not boiling. Do not let it boil.
  3. Remove the saucepan from the heat. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. Taste and add more sugar if you prefer a sweeter drink.
  5. Pour the hot chocolate into mugs immediately.

Notes

  • For a thicker texture, whisk in 1 teaspoon of cornstarch mixed with 1 tablespoon of cold milk before heating.
  • Top with fresh whipped cream or mini marshmallows.
  • Substitute whole milk with oat milk or almond milk for a dairy-free option.
