Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
  • 2 (6 ounce) cans tomato paste
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 12 lasagna noodles
  • 16 ounces ricotta cheese
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 pound mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  2. In a large skillet, brown ground beef with onion and garlic. Drain off excess fat.
  3. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, water, 2 tablespoons parsley, 1 teaspoon basil, 1 teaspoon salt, and 1/2 teaspoon pepper. Simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. While the sauce simmers, cook lasagna noodles according to package directions. Drain and set aside.
  5. In a medium bowl, mix ricotta cheese, egg, 1/4 cup parsley, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon pepper.
  6. Spread about 1 cup of the meat sauce in the bottom of a 13×9 inch baking dish.
  7. Arrange 3 lasagna noodles over the sauce.
  8. Spread half of the ricotta cheese mixture over the noodles.
  9. Top with one-third of the mozzarella cheese.
  10. Spoon about 1.5 cups of meat sauce over the mozzarella.
  11. Repeat layers: noodles, ricotta mixture, mozzarella, sauce.
  12. Top with remaining noodles, sauce, mozzarella, and Parmesan cheese.
  13. Cover with foil. Bake for 25 minutes.
  14. Remove foil and bake for another 25 minutes, or until bubbly and golden brown.
  15. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, you can add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the meat sauce.
  • If you prefer a smoother sauce, you can blend the crushed tomatoes before adding them to the skillet.
  • Ensure your noodles are cooked al dente so they don’t become mushy during baking.
