Description
Make a simple homemade marinara sauce. This recipe uses basic ingredients for a rich, flavorful sauce.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 large onion, chopped
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 (28 ounce) cans crushed tomatoes
- 1 (14.5 ounce) can diced tomatoes
- 1/2 cup fresh basil leaves, chopped
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
- Salt and black pepper to taste
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat.
- Add chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes.
- Stir in minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant. Do not burn the garlic.
- Pour in crushed tomatoes and diced tomatoes.
- Add fresh basil, dried oregano, and red pepper flakes if using.
- Bring the sauce to a simmer, then reduce heat to low.
- Cover and cook for at least 30 minutes, or up to 1 hour, stirring occasionally. The longer it simmers, the more flavor it develops.
- Season with salt and black pepper to taste before serving.
Notes
- For a smoother sauce, use an immersion blender or carefully transfer to a regular blender (in batches) after simmering.
- This sauce freezes well for future use. Store in an airtight container for up to 3 months.
- Adjust the amount of red pepper flakes to your preferred spice level.
