Description

Make a simple homemade marinara sauce. This recipe uses basic ingredients for a rich, flavorful sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 (28 ounce) cans crushed tomatoes
  • 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat.
  2. Add chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Stir in minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
  4. Pour in crushed tomatoes and tomato sauce.
  5. Add oregano, basil, red pepper flakes (if using), salt, and black pepper. Stir to combine.
  6. Bring the sauce to a simmer, then reduce heat to low.
  7. Cover and cook for at least 30 minutes, or up to 2 hours, stirring occasionally. The longer it simmers, the more flavor it develops.
  8. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.
  9. Serve hot over your favorite pasta, garnished with fresh parsley.

Notes

  • For a smoother sauce, use an immersion blender or transfer to a regular blender (carefully) to blend until desired consistency.
  • Add a pinch of sugar if your tomatoes are too acidic.
  • This sauce freezes well for future use.
