Description
Make homemade marinara sauce to elevate your pasta dishes. This straightforward recipe uses canned tomatoes for a delicious, from-scratch sauce.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 large onion, chopped
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 (28 ounce) cans crushed tomatoes
- 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
- 1/4 cup fresh basil, chopped
- Salt to taste
- Black pepper to taste
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat.
- Add chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes.
- Stir in minced garlic and cook for 1 minute more until fragrant.
- Pour in crushed tomatoes and tomato sauce.
- Add oregano and red pepper flakes, if using.
- Bring the sauce to a simmer, then reduce heat to low.
- Cover and cook for at least 30 minutes, or up to 1-2 hours, stirring occasionally. The longer it simmers, the more flavorful it becomes.
- Stir in fresh basil during the last 5 minutes of cooking.
- Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
- Serve warm over your favorite pasta or use in other recipes.
Notes
- For a smoother sauce, you can use an immersion blender to blend the sauce directly in the pot, or carefully transfer it to a regular blender and blend until desired consistency.
- Adjust red pepper flakes to your preferred level of spiciness.
- Store leftover marinara sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days, or freeze for up to 3 months.
