Ingredients
Scale
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 large onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
- 1 (14.5 ounce) can diced tomatoes
- 1/2 cup fresh basil, chopped
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat.
- Add chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes.
- Stir in minced garlic and cook for 1 minute more, until fragrant.
- Pour in crushed tomatoes and diced tomatoes.
- Add fresh basil, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper.
- Bring the sauce to a simmer, then reduce heat to low.
- Cover and cook for at least 30 minutes, or up to 1 hour, stirring occasionally, to allow flavors to meld.
- Taste and adjust seasonings as needed.
- Serve warm over your favorite pasta or use in other recipes.
Notes
- For a smoother sauce, you can use an immersion blender or transfer to a regular blender (carefully!) and blend until desired consistency.
- Adding a pinch of sugar can help balance the acidity of the tomatoes if needed.
- This sauce freezes well for future meals.
