Ingredients
Scale
- 1 gallon apple cider
- 1/2 cup brown sugar (packed)
- 6 whole cinnamon sticks
- 1 tablespoon whole cloves
- 1 teaspoon whole allspice berries
- 2 large oranges, thinly sliced
Instructions
- Pour the apple cider into a large pot.
- Add the brown sugar, cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, and allspice berries to the pot.
- Stir the mixture until the brown sugar dissolves.
- Add the orange slices to the cider.
- Heat the cider over medium heat until it simmers. Do not boil.
- Reduce the heat to low and let it gently mull for at least 30 minutes, or up to 2 hours, stirring occasionally.
- Remove from heat before serving. Strain out the spices and fruit if desired, or serve with a ladle.
Notes
- You can substitute maple syrup for brown sugar.
- For an extra citrus note, add 2 whole star anise pods.
- This cider tastes even better after longer simmering times.
- If you are serving immediately, you can use ground spices, but whole spices give a cleaner flavor.
