Description
A recipe for making a bright, refreshing iced tea using dried hibiscus flowers and fresh mint leaves.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups water
- 1/2 cup dried hibiscus flowers (or 4 hibiscus tea bags)
- 1/2 cup fresh mint leaves, lightly packed
- 1/2 cup simple syrup (adjust to taste)
- Ice cubes
Instructions
- Bring 4 cups of water to a boil in a saucepan.
- Remove the water from the heat. Add the dried hibiscus flowers or tea bags.
- If using fresh mint, lightly crush the leaves with your fingers to release oils, then add them to the hot water.
- Cover the saucepan and let the mixture steep for 10 minutes. Do not over-steep, as this can cause bitterness.
- Strain the tea mixture through a fine-mesh sieve into a heat-safe pitcher to remove the flowers and mint leaves. Discard the solids.
- Stir in the simple syrup until fully dissolved while the tea is still warm.
- Allow the tea to cool to room temperature, then chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours.
- To serve, fill glasses with ice cubes and pour the chilled hibiscus mint tea over the ice. Garnish with extra fresh mint sprigs if desired.
Notes
- For a stronger mint flavor, gently muddle the mint leaves before adding them to the hot water.
- Adjust the amount of simple syrup based on your preference for sweetness.
- To make simple syrup, heat equal parts sugar and water until the sugar dissolves, then cool completely before use.
