This Italian Lasagna recipe is a comforting and delicious dish perfect for family dinners. It’s designed to be easy to follow, bringing the warmth of a home-cooked meal to your table.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound lasagna noodles
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
  • 2 (6 ounce) cans tomato paste
  • 2 (6.5 ounce) cans canned tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 pound ricotta cheese
  • 1 pound mozzarella cheese, shredded

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  2. Cook lasagna noodles according to package directions.
  3. In a large skillet, brown ground beef with onion and garlic. Drain excess grease.
  4. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce, water, sugar, salt, basil, oregano, pepper, and red pepper flakes. Simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  5. In a separate bowl, mix ricotta cheese, beaten eggs, and Parmesan cheese.
  6. Spread a thin layer of meat sauce in the bottom of a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  7. Arrange a layer of cooked lasagna noodles over the sauce.
  8. Spread half of the ricotta cheese mixture over the noodles.
  9. Top with a third of the mozzarella cheese.
  10. Repeat layers: noodles, meat sauce, ricotta mixture, mozzarella cheese.
  11. Finish with a final layer of noodles, the remaining meat sauce, and the remaining mozzarella cheese.
  12. Cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes.
  13. Remove foil and bake for an additional 20-25 minutes, or until bubbly and golden brown.
  14. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For a richer sauce, you can add a splash of red wine to the meat sauce while it simmers.
  • If you prefer a less meaty lasagna, you can use half the amount of ground beef or substitute with Italian sausage.
  • Ensure your ricotta mixture is well combined for even distribution.
