Description

This Korean Beef Bowl, or Bulgogi, is a simple and delicious way to enjoy Korean flavors at home. Thinly sliced beef is marinated in a savory soy-based sauce, then quickly cooked to perfection. It’s a comforting and satisfying meal that’s perfect for a weeknight dinner.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound thinly sliced beef (such as sirloin or ribeye)
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon mirin (optional)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • Cooked rice, for serving
  • Sesame seeds, for garnish
  • Chopped green onions, for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine soy sauce, brown sugar, sesame oil, mirin (if using), minced garlic, grated ginger, and black pepper.
  2. Add the thinly sliced beef to the marinade and toss to coat evenly. Let it marinate for at least 30 minutes, or up to 4 hours in the refrigerator.
  3. Heat the vegetable oil in a skillet or wok over medium-high heat.
  4. Add the marinated beef in a single layer, cooking in batches if necessary to avoid crowding the pan.
  5. Cook for 2-3 minutes per side, until browned and cooked through.
  6. Serve the bulgogi immediately over cooked rice.
  7. Garnish with sesame seeds and chopped green onions.

Notes

  • For thinner slices of beef, partially freeze it before slicing.
  • If you don’t have mirin, you can substitute with a little extra sugar and a splash of rice vinegar.
  • Feel free to add thinly sliced onions or carrots to the stir-fry for extra vegetables.
