Description
Make this Eggnog French Toast Casserole the night before for a simple, warm holiday breakfast. It tastes like your favorite festive drink baked into a comforting casserole. You will love how easy this is to prepare ahead of time.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 loaf (about 14 ounces) thick-cut bread, such as brioche or challah, cut into 1-inch cubes
- 6 large eggs
- 2 cups eggnog
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- Pinch of salt
- Optional Topping: Powdered sugar for dusting
- Optional Topping: Maple syrup for serving
Instructions
- Lightly butter a 9×13 inch baking dish.
- Arrange the bread cubes evenly in the prepared baking dish.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, eggnog, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, nutmeg, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
- Pour the eggnog mixture slowly and evenly over the bread cubes.
- Gently press the bread down to soak up the liquid.
- Cover the dish tightly with plastic wrap.
- Refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight.
- When ready to bake, preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Remove the plastic wrap.
- Bake uncovered for 45 to 55 minutes, or until the casserole is puffed, golden brown, and set in the center. A knife inserted near the center should come out clean.
- Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before serving.
- Dust with powdered sugar and serve warm with maple syrup, if desired.
Notes
- Prepare this casserole the night before to save time in the morning.
- Use day-old bread if possible; it absorbs the custard better.
- If your eggnog is heavily spiced, you might reduce the added nutmeg slightly.
- This recipe freezes well after baking; cool completely, wrap tightly, and freeze. Reheat covered at 350 degrees F until warmed through.
