Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into cubes
- 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- For the Glaze:
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2-3 tablespoons maple syrup
- 1 tablespoon milk
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt.
- Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Stir in the chopped walnuts.
- In a separate small bowl, whisk together the heavy cream, egg, and vanilla extract.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Do not overmix.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently pat it into a circle about 3/4 inch thick.
- Cut the circle into 8 wedges.
- Place the wedges on the prepared baking sheet.
- Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown.
- While the scones are baking, prepare the glaze. In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, maple syrup, and milk until smooth. Add more milk if needed to reach desired consistency.
- Let the scones cool slightly on a wire rack before drizzling with the maple glaze.
Notes
- For an extra fall flavor, you can add 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon to the dry ingredients.
- If you don’t have heavy cream, you can substitute with half-and-half or whole milk.
- Make sure your butter is very cold for the flakiest scones.
