Description
Make smooth, flavorful pear butter. This recipe uses simple ingredients and steps. Perfect for spreading on toast or mixing into yogurt.
Ingredients
Scale
- 6 pounds ripe pears, peeled, cored, and chopped
- 1/2 cup apple cider
- 1/4 cup brown sugar, packed
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
Instructions
- Combine chopped pears, apple cider, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt in a large pot or Dutch oven.
- Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally.
- Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 30-40 minutes, or until pears are very soft, stirring occasionally.
- Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
- Carefully transfer the pear mixture to a blender or food processor. Blend until smooth. Alternatively, use an immersion blender directly in the pot.
- Return the smooth pear butter to the pot. Cook uncovered over low heat for 1-2 hours, stirring frequently, until thickened to your desired consistency. It should mound on a spoon.
- Carefully ladle the hot pear butter into clean, hot jars, leaving 1/2 inch headspace.
- Process in a boiling water canner for 10 minutes (adjusting for altitude if necessary). Alternatively, store in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks or freeze for up to 6 months.
Notes
- Choose ripe, but firm pears for the best flavor.
- Adjust spices to your preference. A pinch of ginger can be a nice addition.
- For a thinner consistency, cook for less time in the final step.
- If canning, ensure jars and lids are properly sterilized.
