Description
Make a simple, flavorful tomato sauce using pantry staples. This recipe is fast enough for a weeknight meal and works well for pasta or pizza.
Ingredients
Scale
- 28 oz can crushed tomatoes
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon sugar
- 1/4 cup fresh basil leaves, chopped
Instructions
- Heat the olive oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat.
- Add the minced garlic and red pepper flakes. Cook for 1 minute until fragrant; do not let the garlic brown.
- Pour in the crushed tomatoes. Stir in the dried oregano, salt, and sugar.
- Bring the sauce to a simmer. Reduce the heat to low and cook uncovered for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Remove the sauce from the heat. Stir in the fresh chopped basil.
- Use immediately or cool and store.
Notes
- For a smoother sauce, use an immersion blender briefly after cooking.
- If you use whole peeled tomatoes, crush them by hand before adding them to the pot.
- Adjust salt and sugar to your taste preference after simmering.
