Description
A simple recipe for a fresh, fruity, and herbal summer cocktail featuring muddled strawberries and basil.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 fresh strawberries, hulled and quartered
- 6 fresh basil leaves
- 0.75 oz fresh lime juice
- 0.75 oz simple syrup
- 2 oz gin or vodka
- Ice
- Soda water (optional, for topping)
Instructions
- Place the quartered strawberries and basil leaves into a cocktail shaker.
- Gently muddle the strawberries and basil until the fruit is broken down and the basil releases its aroma. Do not over-muddle the basil, as it can become bitter.
- Add the lime juice, simple syrup, and your choice of spirit (gin or vodka) to the shaker.
- Fill the shaker with ice.
- Seal the shaker and shake well until thoroughly chilled, about 15 seconds.
- Double strain the mixture into a rocks glass filled with fresh ice.
- Top with a small splash of soda water, if desired, for extra fizz.
- Garnish with a fresh strawberry slice and a small basil sprig.
Notes
- For a sweeter drink, increase the simple syrup to 1 oz.
- If you prefer a richer flavor, use bourbon instead of gin or vodka.
- To make simple syrup, combine equal parts sugar and hot water and stir until dissolved; let cool before use.
