Description
Make classic Salisbury Steak with rich mushroom gravy. This comforting dish brings warmth to your table with simple ingredients and straightforward steps.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 ½ pounds ground beef (80/20 lean)
- ½ cup finely chopped onion
- ¼ cup breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 8 ounces cremini mushrooms, sliced
- 1 medium onion, sliced
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
- ½ teaspoon dried thyme
- Salt and black pepper to taste
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine ground beef, finely chopped onion, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, black pepper, and salt. Mix until just combined. Do not overmix.
- Divide the mixture into 4-6 oval patties, about ¾ inch thick.
- Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook for 4-5 minutes per side, until browned. Remove patties from the skillet and set aside.
- In the same skillet, add sliced mushrooms and sliced onion. Cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened and lightly browned.
- Add butter to the skillet and let it melt. Sprinkle in the flour and cook, stirring constantly, for 1 minute to create a roux.
- Gradually whisk in the beef broth, stirring until smooth. Add Dijon mustard and dried thyme. Bring the gravy to a simmer, stirring occasionally, until it thickens, about 5-7 minutes.
- Return the cooked Salisbury steak patties to the skillet with the gravy. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 10-15 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the patties to cook through.
- Taste and adjust salt and pepper as needed.
- Serve hot with mashed potatoes or noodles.
Notes
- For extra flavor, use a mix of ground beef and ground pork in the patties.
- If you prefer a thicker gravy, simmer it for a few extra minutes.
- Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
