Description
Make a classic Salisbury Steak with Mushroom Gravy. This dish combines seasoned ground beef patties with a rich, savory mushroom gravy, perfect for a comforting meal.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 ½ pounds ground beef (80/20 lean)
- ½ cup finely chopped onion
- â…“ cup plain breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 8 ounces cremini mushrooms, sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 3 cups beef broth
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon fresh thyme, chopped (or ½ teaspoon dried)
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Combine ground beef, chopped onion, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper in a large bowl. Mix until just combined; do not overmix.
- Divide the mixture into 6 equal portions and shape each into an oval patty, about ¾ inch thick.
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook for 4-5 minutes per side, until browned. Remove patties from the skillet and set aside.
- Reduce heat to medium. Add sliced mushrooms to the skillet and cook for 5-7 minutes, until softened and browned.
- Add minced garlic to the skillet and cook for 1 minute, until fragrant.
- Sprinkle flour over the mushrooms and stir for 1 minute to coat.
- Gradually whisk in beef broth, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet.
- Bring the gravy to a simmer, then add fresh thyme. Cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the gravy thickens.
- Return the Salisbury steak patties to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy.
- Simmer for another 5-10 minutes, or until the patties are cooked through and the gravy is heated.
- Season the gravy with additional salt and pepper to taste before serving.
Notes
- You can serve Salisbury steak with mashed potatoes or egg noodles to soak up the delicious gravy.
- For extra flavor, use a mix of mushrooms like shiitake or button mushrooms.
- If the gravy is too thick, add a splash more beef broth. If it’s too thin, simmer longer to reduce or make a slurry of 1 teaspoon cornstarch with 1 tablespoon cold water and whisk into the simmering gravy.
