Description

Make a classic Salisbury Steak with Mushroom Gravy. This dish combines seasoned ground beef patties with a rich, savory mushroom gravy, perfect for a comforting meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ½ pounds ground beef (80/20 lean)
  • ½ cup finely chopped onion
  • â…“ cup plain breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 8 ounces cremini mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme, chopped (or ½ teaspoon dried)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Combine ground beef, chopped onion, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper in a large bowl. Mix until just combined; do not overmix.
  2. Divide the mixture into 6 equal portions and shape each into an oval patty, about ¾ inch thick.
  3. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook for 4-5 minutes per side, until browned. Remove patties from the skillet and set aside.
  4. Reduce heat to medium. Add sliced mushrooms to the skillet and cook for 5-7 minutes, until softened and browned.
  5. Add minced garlic to the skillet and cook for 1 minute, until fragrant.
  6. Sprinkle flour over the mushrooms and stir for 1 minute to coat.
  7. Gradually whisk in beef broth, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet.
  8. Bring the gravy to a simmer, then add fresh thyme. Cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the gravy thickens.
  9. Return the Salisbury steak patties to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy.
  10. Simmer for another 5-10 minutes, or until the patties are cooked through and the gravy is heated.
  11. Season the gravy with additional salt and pepper to taste before serving.

Notes

  • You can serve Salisbury steak with mashed potatoes or egg noodles to soak up the delicious gravy.
  • For extra flavor, use a mix of mushrooms like shiitake or button mushrooms.
  • If the gravy is too thick, add a splash more beef broth. If it’s too thin, simmer longer to reduce or make a slurry of 1 teaspoon cornstarch with 1 tablespoon cold water and whisk into the simmering gravy.
