Description
Make a classic Salisbury Steak with rich mushroom gravy. This simple recipe brings comfort to your table.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 1/2 pounds ground beef (80/20 lean)
- 1/2 cup finely chopped onion
- 1/4 cup plain breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 8 ounces cremini mushrooms, sliced
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tablespoon ketchup
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
- Fresh parsley, chopped, for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine ground beef, chopped onion, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined. Do not overmix.
- Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions. Shape each portion into an oval patty, about 3/4-inch thick.
- Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook for 4-5 minutes per side, until browned. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
- Add sliced mushrooms to the same skillet. Cook, stirring occasionally, until softened and browned, about 5-7 minutes.
- Sprinkle flour over the mushrooms and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
- Gradually whisk in the beef broth, ketchup, and Dijon mustard. Bring the gravy to a simmer, stirring constantly, until it thickens.
- Return the Salisbury steak patties to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 10-15 minutes, or until the patties are cooked through.
- Garnish with fresh parsley, if desired, and serve hot.
Notes
- For extra flavor, use a mix of mushrooms like shiitake and cremini.
- If the gravy is too thick, add a splash more beef broth until it reaches your desired consistency.
- Serve Salisbury steak with mashed potatoes or egg noodles to soak up all the delicious gravy.
