Description
This recipe guides you to create a perfect sesame-crusted tuna steak with seared edges and a rare center, complemented by a flavorful dipping sauce.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 (6-ounce) tuna steaks, 1-inch thick
- 2 tablespoons black sesame seeds
- 2 tablespoons white sesame seeds
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
- For the Dipping Sauce:
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
- 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
- 1/2 teaspoon sesame oil
- Pinch of red pepper flakes (optional)
Instructions
- Combine black and white sesame seeds on a plate. Season tuna steaks with salt and pepper. Press both sides of each tuna steak into the sesame seeds, coating evenly.
- Heat olive oil in a non-stick skillet over medium-high heat until shimmering.
- Carefully place tuna steaks in the hot skillet. Sear for 1-2 minutes per side for a rare center, or longer for desired doneness. The edges should be nicely seared and the sesame seeds golden.
- While tuna cooks, whisk together soy sauce, rice vinegar, grated ginger, sesame oil, and red pepper flakes (if using) in a small bowl to make the dipping sauce.
- Remove tuna from skillet and let rest for a minute. Slice tuna against the grain into 1/2-inch thick pieces.
- Serve immediately with the prepared dipping sauce.
Notes
- Choose fresh, sushi-grade tuna for the best results, especially if you prefer it rare.
- Adjust searing time based on the thickness of your tuna and your preferred level of doneness.
- You can prepare the dipping sauce ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator.
- For an extra layer of flavor, try adding a squeeze of lime juice to the dipping sauce.
