Description

A simple recipe for making sliced garlic bread topped with melted cheese, baked until golden brown.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf French or Italian bread (about 12 inches long)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190 degrees Celsius). Line a baking sheet with foil.
  2. In a small bowl, combine the softened butter, minced garlic, chopped parsley, oregano, salt, and pepper. Mix until you have a smooth garlic butter spread.
  3. Slice the loaf of bread crosswise into slices about 1 inch thick, cutting almost all the way through but leaving the bottom crust intact so the slices stay connected.
  4. Spread the garlic butter mixture evenly over the cut surfaces of the bread slices, making sure to get some butter into the crevices.
  5. In a separate bowl, mix the mozzarella, cheddar, and Parmesan cheeses together.
  6. Gently pull the slices apart slightly and sprinkle the cheese mixture generously over the buttered surfaces of the bread.
  7. Place the loaf on the prepared baking sheet.
  8. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, or until the cheese is fully melted and bubbly and the edges of the bread are lightly toasted.
  9. For extra browning, switch the oven to broil for the last 1 to 2 minutes, watching carefully to prevent burning.
  10. Remove from the oven and let it cool for 5 minutes before slicing completely and serving.

Notes

  • Use a sturdy loaf of bread to prevent it from falling apart during slicing and baking.
  • If you prefer a softer interior, wrap the loaf loosely in aluminum foil for the first 10 minutes of baking, then unwrap to melt the cheese.
  • For a stronger garlic flavor, let the minced garlic sit in the softened butter for 10 minutes before spreading.
