Description

Create amazing Smoky BBQ Jackfruit Sandwiches. This recipe offers a satisfying, flavorful vegan dinner that brings comfort straight to your table. You will love how simple it is to make something this delicious.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cans (20 ounces each) young green jackfruit in brine or water, drained and rinsed
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium yellow onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup vegetable broth
  • 1 cup your favorite BBQ sauce
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar (optional, for extra sweetness)
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon liquid smoke (optional, for deeper flavor)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 4 whole wheat sandwich buns
  • Optional toppings: Coleslaw, pickles, sliced red onion

Instructions

  1. Rinse the jackfruit well and pat it dry. Squeeze out excess water. Tear the larger pieces of jackfruit into shreds using your hands or two forks.
  2. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
  3. Add the minced garlic to the skillet and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
  4. Add the shredded jackfruit to the pan. Stir and cook for about 5 minutes, allowing it to warm through.
  5. Pour in the vegetable broth, BBQ sauce, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar (if using), smoked paprika, and liquid smoke (if using). Stir everything together well.
  6. Bring the mixture to a simmer. Reduce the heat to low, cover the skillet, and let it cook for 15 to 20 minutes. This helps the jackfruit absorb the flavor.
  7. Remove the lid. If the sauce is too thin, increase the heat slightly and cook uncovered for a few more minutes until it thickens to your liking. Season with salt and pepper.
  8. Toast your sandwich buns lightly.
  9. Spoon a generous amount of the smoky BBQ jackfruit onto each bottom bun.
  10. Top with your favorite additions like coleslaw or pickles. Place the top bun on and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Make sure you drain and rinse the jackfruit thoroughly to remove any brine taste.
  • For a quicker prep, use pre-shredded jackfruit if you can find it.
  • You can make the BBQ jackfruit mixture ahead of time and reheat it when you are ready to eat.
  • Adjust the amount of BBQ sauce to control the sweetness and tanginess of your sandwich.
