Description

Southern Fried Green Tomatoes are a classic dish featuring firm, unripe green tomatoes sliced and fried to golden perfection. This traditional recipe brings a taste of the South to your table.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 firm green tomatoes, unripe
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cornmeal
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • Vegetable oil or shortening, for frying

Instructions

  1. Wash and slice green tomatoes into 1/4-inch thick rounds. Discard the ends.
  2. In a shallow dish, whisk together flour, cornmeal, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper (if using).
  3. Pour buttermilk into another shallow dish.
  4. Dip each tomato slice first in buttermilk, letting excess drip off.
  5. Then dredge the tomato slice in the flour mixture, pressing gently to ensure an even coating.
  6. Heat about 1/2 inch of oil or shortening in a large skillet over medium-high heat. The oil is ready when a drop of water sizzles when added.
  7. Carefully place coated tomato slices in the hot oil, without overcrowding the skillet.
  8. Fry for 3-5 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy.
  9. Remove fried tomatoes from the skillet and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  10. Serve immediately as a side dish or appetizer.

Notes

  • Choose very firm, unripe green tomatoes for the best texture. Ripe tomatoes will be too soft.
  • Do not overcrowd the pan when frying; this can lower the oil temperature and result in greasy tomatoes. Fry in batches if necessary.
  • Season the tomatoes immediately after frying for optimal flavor.
