Description

Southern Fried Green Tomatoes are a classic dish. This recipe uses firm unripe green tomatoes, sliced and fried to perfection. Enjoy this comforting, easy-to-make dish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 medium green tomatoes, firm and unripe
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cornmeal
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for a little kick)
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • Vegetable oil or shortening, for frying

Instructions

  1. Wash and dry the green tomatoes. Slice them about 1/4 inch thick.
  2. In a shallow dish, combine the flour, cornmeal, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper (if using). Stir well.
  3. Pour the buttermilk into another shallow dish.
  4. Dip each tomato slice into the buttermilk, letting any excess drip off.
  5. Dredge the buttermilk-coated tomato slice in the flour mixture, pressing gently to ensure it’s fully coated. Shake off any excess flour.
  6. Heat about 1 inch of vegetable oil or shortening in a large skillet over medium-high heat. The oil is ready when a small pinch of flour sizzles immediately upon contact.
  7. Carefully place the coated tomato slices in the hot oil in a single layer, without overcrowding the pan.
  8. Fry for 3-5 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy.
  9. Remove the fried tomatoes from the skillet and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
  10. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • Use firm, unripe green tomatoes for the best texture. Ripe tomatoes will be too soft.
  • Do not overcrowd the skillet while frying. Fry in batches if needed to maintain oil temperature and ensure even cooking.
  • Season the tomatoes with additional salt immediately after frying, if desired.
