Description

Southern Fried Green Tomatoes are a classic dish featuring firm, unripe green tomatoes sliced and fried to a golden crisp. This recipe delivers a traditional taste, perfect for anyone looking for a comforting, easy-to-make side or appetizer.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 firm green tomatoes
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cornmeal
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Wash and slice green tomatoes into 1/4-inch thick rounds. Discard the ends.
  2. In a shallow dish, combine flour, cornmeal, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper (if using).
  3. In another shallow dish, whisk together eggs and milk.
  4. Dip each tomato slice into the egg mixture, allowing excess to drip off.
  5. Dredge the tomato slice in the flour mixture, pressing gently to ensure an even coating.
  6. Heat about 1/2 inch of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  7. Once the oil is hot (a small drop of water should sizzle), carefully place tomato slices in the skillet in a single layer, without overcrowding.
  8. Fry for 3-4 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy.
  9. Remove fried tomatoes from the skillet and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
  10. Serve immediately and enjoy the warm, crispy goodness.

Notes

  • Choose firm, unripe green tomatoes for the best texture. Ripe tomatoes will be too soft.
  • Do not overcrowd the pan; fry in batches if necessary to maintain oil temperature and ensure even cooking.
  • Adjust seasoning to your preference.
