Description
Make comforting Swedish meatballs with a rich, creamy sauce. This recipe brings a taste of home to your table.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1/2 lb ground pork
- 1/2 cup finely chopped onion
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1/4 tsp allspice
- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
- 1 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine ground beef, ground pork, onion, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, salt, pepper, and allspice. Mix until just combined. Do not overmix.
- Roll the mixture into 1-inch meatballs.
- Melt butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add meatballs and brown on all sides. You may need to do this in batches. Remove meatballs from skillet and set aside.
- Reduce heat to medium. Add flour to the skillet and whisk constantly for 1-2 minutes, forming a roux.
- Gradually whisk in beef broth, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan. Bring to a simmer, stirring until the sauce thickens.
- Stir in heavy cream and Dijon mustard. Return meatballs to the skillet.
- Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until meatballs are cooked through and tender.
- Serve hot, garnished with fresh parsley.
Notes
- For extra flavor, use a mixture of beef and pork.
- Do not overmix the meatball mixture; it can make the meatballs tough.
- Brown the meatballs in batches to avoid overcrowding the pan, which can steam them instead of browning.
- Adjust the consistency of the sauce by adding more broth or simmering longer.
