Description

Make comforting Swedish meatballs with simple ingredients. This recipe brings the taste of home to your table.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 lb ground pork
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Fresh parsley, chopped, for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, ground pork, chopped onion, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Mix gently until just combined. Do not overmix.
  2. Roll the mixture into 1-inch meatballs. You should get about 30-35 meatballs.
  3. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the meatballs and cook in batches, browning them on all sides. Remove the browned meatballs from the skillet and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, sprinkle flour into the remaining butter and drippings. Whisk constantly for 1-2 minutes until a light roux forms.
  5. Gradually whisk in the beef broth, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet. Bring to a simmer, whisking until the sauce thickens.
  6. Stir in the heavy cream, Dijon mustard, and Worcestershire sauce. Bring the sauce back to a gentle simmer.
  7. Return the browned meatballs to the skillet, nestling them into the sauce. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the meatballs are cooked through.
  8. Serve hot, garnished with fresh chopped parsley. Enjoy with mashed potatoes or egg noodles.

Notes

  • You can prepare the meatballs ahead of time and refrigerate them for up to 24 hours before cooking.
  • For a richer flavor, use a good quality beef broth.
  • If you prefer, you can bake the meatballs instead of pan-frying them. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 15-20 minutes until cooked through, then add to the sauce.
