Description

These Witch Finger Cookies are a simple and spooky Halloween treat. They are easy to make and shaped like gnarled fingers, often with a green tint and an almond ‘fingernail’ for a truly horrific look.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract
  • 2 2/3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Green food coloring (optional)
  • Almond slivers, for fingernails
  • Red gel food coloring or jam, for blood effect (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and powdered sugar until light and fluffy.
  2. Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract until well combined.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined and a soft dough forms. If using, add a few drops of green food coloring and mix until the desired color is achieved.
  5. Divide the dough into small portions. Roll each portion into a finger shape, about 3-4 inches long, slightly thinner in the middle to resemble a knuckle.
  6. Press an almond sliver onto one end of each ‘finger’ to create a fingernail. Use a knife to make small indentations at the knuckles to enhance the finger-like appearance.
  7. Preheat your oven to 325°F (160°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  8. Place the shaped cookies on the prepared baking sheet.
  9. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.
  10. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  11. For an extra spooky effect, dab a small amount of red gel food coloring or jam under the almond fingernail to resemble blood.

Notes

  • Ensure your butter is softened but not melted for the best dough consistency.
  • Do not overmix the dough after adding the flour, as this can make the cookies tough.
  • Adjust the amount of green food coloring to achieve your desired level of spookiness.
  • If the dough is too sticky to work with, chill it in the refrigerator for 15-30 minutes.
  • Get creative with the finger shapes; some can be bent or gnarled for a more realistic look.
