Description

Make Skillet Honey Cornbread. This classic cornbread recipe, made in a cast iron skillet, gives you crispy edges. It is perfect to accompany chili or BBQ.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup yellow cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, for greasing skillet

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Place a 10-inch cast iron skillet in the oven while it preheats.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cornmeal, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  4. In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the milk, honey, melted butter, and egg.
  5. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Stir until just combined. Do not overmix; a few lumps are fine.
  6. Carefully remove the hot skillet from the oven. Add 2 tablespoons of butter to the skillet. Swirl to coat the bottom and sides as the butter melts.
  7. Pour the cornbread batter into the hot, buttered skillet.
  8. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Remove from the oven and let cool in the skillet for a few minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • For extra crispy edges, ensure your cast iron skillet is very hot before adding the batter.
  • You can drizzle additional honey over the cornbread before serving for more sweetness.
  • This cornbread pairs wonderfully with chili, stews, or BBQ.
